3 Questions to Unlock Your Authentic Career

In this TedxTalk, Ashley Stahl shares how working with a career coach fundamentally changed her life. It helped her figure out why her dream job in national security was not making her happy. Today, Stahl is a career coach herself and on a mission to help others find satisfaction in what they do.

In doing work we’re suited for, we’ll not only have more career success, we’ll have greater job satisfaction too.  ~ Ashley Stahl

Find out the three questions Stahl recommends you ask yourself to unlock your authentic career and find work that is so YOU.

The Coach Says:

Always do your best!

It can take time to nail down what you’re good at and best suited for. Until you do, it still pays to lean in to whatever job/work you’re doing to pay the rent. The person we become is etched by ALL our habits, and to quote Dr. Phil, “The way you do anything is the way you do everything.”

So, even in work we don’t love, we define who we become by how we do it and approach it. Plus, you never know who is watching and what opportunities can come from doing quality work.

Be strategic and consistent

If  you’re unable to hire a coach, create your own strategy to finding the job you love.

Start with a quiz. Now, I don’t believe a quiz can perfectly identify what you should do with your life, but they are a good place to start. These are four I like:

Self-Directed Search

Pymetrics

The MAPP™ Career Assessment Test

Career Strengths Test

Create a career research strategy. Treat this like a college course and put together a syllabus with a start and end date and approach it with consistency. For example, block the time on your calendar.

  1. Careers in (insert name of your fields)

  2. In-depth research into (list of fields you’ve narrowed down)

  3. Hands-on research

  4. Identify LinkedIn and social media connections

  5. Identify next steps
